Caring for our communities means caring for the environment we all share. Through focused investments and systemwide collaboration, we are reducing our environmental impact while delivering lasting financial value. Since 2019, greenhouse gas emissions have decreased by 27%, reflecting steady progress toward a healthier future. In 2025 alone, sustainability initiatives generated $4.1 million in savings by avoiding utility, procurement, and waste costs—demonstrating that environmental stewardship and operational efficiency go hand in hand.
Our Sustainability Revolving Fund continues to drive meaningful change, with 14 projects funded across the system. These efforts include energy‑efficient LED lighting, redesigned sterilization trays at United Hospital, and expanded reuse programs. Through the Rheaply reuse platform, we hosted three volunteer events and achieved $349,600 in cost avoidance year to date by redistributing surplus items where they can be put to good use. Additional projects—from hospital bed donations to organics and waste‑reduction initiatives led by MnTAP interns—are strengthening our circular economy approach.
We are also expanding access to clean energy. Solar panels on the Purple Ramp at Abbott Northwestern Hospital generate renewable electricity while supporting a community benefit solar project. Several sites, including Anoka, St. Francis, Buffalo, and River Falls, now source 100% renewable electricity from local utilities. A systemwide energy efficiency study is underway to guide continued progress as we work toward a more sustainable, resilient future—together, for the health of our communities and our planet.
